Kammermusik Workshops Winter 2012

Strauss, Dvorak and Baroque

Saturday, February 18th to Monday, February 20th 2012

This year, we will focus on two of the outstanding works for large wind ensemble:

And for those whose tastes incline to the earlier repertoire, our popular Baroque Workshop, coached by Carole Redman, is returning. This workshop will accept (almost!) any number of flutes, oboes, bassoons, violins, violas, cellos and two or three keyboard players. The pitch will be A=440 Hz.

The 2012 Winter Workshop provides wind players the opportunity for artistic and personal growth in a friendly, supportive, non-competitive atmosphere where all participants can improve their skills and ensemble playing.

Format
Each group will work with the conductor/coach named above for the whole of the workshop. Selected parts of the pieces will be performed for the other participants on the final day.

Coach/Conductors
Our conductors/coaches, Thomas O'Connor, Doug Dunston and Carole Redman all offer substantial professional experience in ensemble performance, education, and conducting - and they're just great people to work with! Please check their bios here.

Where is the workshop?
Sunrise Springs, located on the outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Instrumentation - Who should attend
We shall need flutes, oboes, clarinets, basset horn, bass clarinet, bassoons, horns, contrabassoon, cello and double bass, and can also accept violins and violas for the Baroque workshop. Your registration form allows you to show your preference, but we shall be selecting the most appropriate players for each ensemble and we may offer you a workshop that is not your first choice.

Is this workshop right for me?
This workshop is for strong intermediate to advanced players who can commit to practicing the music ahead of the workshop. The Strauss in particular is a very challenging work. We ask all new applicants to complete the ACMP self-grading questionnaire so that we can select participants and assign parts appropriately, ensuring maximum enjoyment for all. If you've been to one of our workshops before but have improved since then, feel free to take the test again! If you haven't been before, you may wish to send us a recording and/or a reference from a teacher, however, this is not an absolute requirement.

What will happen each day?
Each day, you will play in an assigned group from approximately 9 to 4 (9 to 1:30 on Monday) with breaks and lunch. Each group will work with an assigned conductor/coach throughout the weekend. On Monday afternoon, there will be an informal performance at Sunrise Springs. And, of course, in addition to playing all day, there will be organized social activities including group dinners as well as a pizza party.

Can I bring a guest?
Of course. Your guests are welcome to observe the workshop sessions and attend the final concert for free. They also may join us for meals for a cost of $25. During the day, there are plenty of fun things for your guests to do on the grounds of Sunrise Springs and in nearby Santa Fe.

How much will it cost?
There is a registration fee of $380 for workshop participation, which includes tuition, administrative costs, snacks and lunches on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Accommodation is available at Sunrise Springs (please see below for prices). You may also make independent arrangements for accommodation elsewhere.

What if I cannot afford it?
We have a limited financial aid program which allows us to award a few "scholarships" in the $100 to $380 range.

How do I register?
Complete the online registration form. Registration will be final once you are accepted for the workshop and have paid the registration fee.
