Kammermusik Workshops Winter 2010

Wind Decet Music

Friday, February 19th to Sunday, February 21st 2010

This year, we will take a musical journey across the globe and across the centuries as we explore the diversity of the large wind ensemble form. We'll make stops in Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Eastern Europe, Russia and South America, and time travel from the 18th through 21st centuries. Enjoy the rare opportunity to work on and perform sometimes lesser-known but phenomenal works (or arrangements) which offer such logistical challenges to play back home!

The 2010 Winter Workshop provides wind players the opportunity for artistic and personal growth in a friendly, supportive, non-competitive atmosphere where all participants can improve their skills and ensemble playing. A sampling of the delights in store for the intrepid players who join our musical journey includes:

- Françaix's dixtuor Les Malheurs de Sophie
- Caplet's Suite Persane
- Albeniz's Tango
- Lyadov's Russian Folk Songs
- Milhaud's Symphonie No. 5 (dixtuor)

Format
To ensure a satisfying musical voyage for all, each group will focus on two primary works, differing by country of origin or time period. A library of other works will be available for additional reading as time permits. Each group will work with a primary coach/conductor, with occasional guest play-throughs with the other conductors

Coach/Conductors
Our committed conductor-coaches for the 2010 winter session reflect the diversity of our material. We have assembled a top-notch set of professionals to guide our musical experience, including Thomas O'Connor, Laura Dwyer, Doug Dunston and Chris Weait. All offer substantial professional experience in ensemble performance, education, and conducting - and they're just great people to work with! Please check the bios here.

Where is the workshop?
Sunrise Springs, located on the outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Instrumentation - Who should attend
Instrumentation will vary somewhat from group to group based on the featured musical works, but we are accepting flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoon, horn, contrabassoon - a few works may double piccolo, English horn or one of the other clarinet forms. Please mark your registration form appropriately so we can ensure these parts are covered!

We intend to form at least four complete ensembles of 8 - 11 players, with each ensemble having the opportunity to perform in the final public concert, held on the last afternoon of the workshop. While we do offer the public concert to close the Workshop, the focus of this weekend is really on the ensemble work and discovery of this unique repertoire.

Is this workshop right for me?
This workshop is for strong intermediate to advanced players who can commit to practicing the music ahead of the workshop. We ask all new applicants to complete the KMW self-grading questionnaire so that we can select participants and assign parts appropriately, ensuring maximum enjoyment for all. If you've been to one of our workshops before but have improved since then, feel free to take the test again! If you haven't been before, you may wish to send us a recording and/or a reference from a teacher (see questionnaire for details; however, this is not required).

What will we play?
Large wind ensemble works from across the centuries and around the world. Each group will focus on two primary contrasting works (differing by time period and/or country of origin). A detailed list of the musical works, as well as links to information on them, will be posted here as the list is finalized.

What will happen each day?
Each day, you will play in an assigned group from approximately 9 to 4 (9 to 1:30 on Sunday) with breaks and lunch. Each group will work with an assigned conductor/coach throughout the weekend, with a couple of short play-throughs with one or two of the other conductor/coaches to keep ideas fresh and see complementary styles.

On Sunday afternoon, there will be an informal performance at Sunrise Springs. And, of course, in addition to playing all day, there will be organized social activities including group dinners as well as a pizza party.

Can I bring a guest?
Of course. Your guests are welcome to observe the workshop sessions and attend the final concert for free. They also may join us for meals for a cost of $24. During the day, there are plenty of fun things for your guests to do on the grounds of Sunrise Springs and in nearby Santa Fe.

How much will it cost?
There is a registration fee of $380 for workshop participation, which includes tuition, administrative costs, snacks and lunches on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Accommodation is available at Sunrise Springs (please see below for prices). You may also make independent arrangements for accommodation elsewhere.

What if I cannot afford it?
We have a limited financial aid program which allows us to award a few "scholarships" in the $100 to $380 range.

How do I register?
Complete the online registration form. Registration will be final once you are accepted for the workshop and have paid the registration fee.
